History of Carthage First Methodist Church

Organized in 1855, the Methodists erected the first frame church in Carthage in 1860-61, at the same location of the First United Methodist Church today.

Construction began before the Civil War started, but all work ceased with only the outside frame structure  completed when the nation became involved in the War.  In 1866 the interior was completed by volunteers who returned from the service.  This pioneer church building was used by Methodists and often by other denominations until 1902.

The necessity for a larger, more appropriate Sanctuary moved the congregation to erect a new church building on the same property.  The new building was designed in the form of a Greek Cross.  This second building was home to Carthage Methodists from 1902 until the present church building was completed in 1942.  Though several repairs and expansions have been necessary during the last more than 60 years, this house of worship is still a "blessed spot" to members of this church.
